Description

HG_TEXEL - Herring gulls (Larus argentatus, Laridae) breeding in Texel (the Netherlands) is a bird tracking dataset published by the University of Amsterdam and the Research Institute for Nature and Forest (INBO). It contains animal tracking data for the study HG_TEXEL using trackers developed by the University of Amsterdam Bird Tracking System (UvA-BiTS, http://www.uva-bits.nl). The study has been operational since 2013. In total 31 individuals of European herring gull (Larus argentatus) have been tagged in their breeding area in the Kelderhuispolder on Texel, a Wadden Island in the Netherlands. The main goal of the study is to identify their primary foraging areas and resources during the breeding season and the consequences of habitat change on these birds. Data are uploaded from the UvA-BiTS database to Movebank and from there archived on Zenodo (see https://github.com/inbo/bird-tracking).

Files

Data in this package are exported from Movebank study 8872869475. Fields in the data follow the Movebank Attribute Dictionary and are described in datapackage.json. Files are structured as a Frictionless Data Package. You can access all data in R via https://zenodo.org/records/20706395/files/datapackage.json using frictionless.

  • datapackage.json: technical description of the data files.
  • HG_TEXEL-reference-data.csv: reference data about the animals, tags and deployments.
  • HG_TEXEL-gps-yyyy.csv.gz: GPS data recorded by the tags, grouped by year.
  • HG_TEXEL-acceleration-yyyy.csv.gz: acceleration data recorded by the tags, grouped by year.

Acknowledgements

These data were collected by the University of Amsterdam (UvA) in collaboration with the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ). Permission to work in the colony was granted by Staatsbosbeheer Texel. The research infrastructure was supported by LifeWatch, SURF Foundation and the Dutch national e-science centre (NLeSC) and carried out on the Dutch national e-infrastructure with the support of SURF Cooperative. The dataset was published with funding from Stichting NLBIF - Netherlands Biodiversity Information Facility.
